Project Description:
Objectives:
Pedestrian, Bicycle, or Scooter Safety: Promoting visibility through reflective gear/bright clothing and helmet use. Educating on following traffic rules like using crosswalks, obeying signals and avoiding distractions. Raising awareness about vulnerability and the
importance of being a safe pedestrian and rider
Drive-focused safety: Targeting unsafe driving behaviors (speeding, running red lights), sharing the road with vulnerable users (pedestrians, scooters, motorcycles, etc.), distracted driving prevention
Ride-focused safety: Encouraging passengers to reduce driver distractions, promoting designated texters, intervening in unsafe driving.
Impaired driving/riding/walking safety: Highlighting risks and consequences of impairment from
alcohol, drugs (prescription or illegal), drowsy driving, and promoting alternatives like
designated drivers or rideshare services.
School/Community Engagement:
We connected with Student Communications for distributing emails and newsletters about our project, as well as our pedestrian safety survey to identify problem areas on campus. We also partnered with student/staff organizations with tabling events/info sessions.
Creativity:
We used a creative slogan and used the department of Student Communications to get our message across. Our pedestrian safety survey sparked interest in the Project Management team — they are in the planning stages of a redevelopment plan for one side of campus and will take our results into account.
Use of Resources:
We used social media, tabling events, the department of Student Communications and student/staff organizations as resources to spread info about our awareness campaign and survey.
Evaluation and Impact:
We used social media interactions and a survey to measure community engagement.
