As children gain confidence and independence, they start walking, biking, and riding with less supervision.

These years are about building responsibility and helping kids learn how to travel safely on their own.

  • Children should use a booster seat until they fit properly in an adult seat belt, usually when they are at least 4’9” tall and between 8–12 years old.
  • The seat belt should rest across the chest and shoulder, not the neck or face, and the lap belt should lie flat across the upper thighs.
  • Children under 13 years old should always ride in the back seat, which is the safest place in a vehicle.

Elementary-age children may begin riding the bus or carpooling without an adult. Review these rules often to help them stay aware and safe.

  • Arrive early and stand five giant steps back from the curb while waiting for the bus.
  • Wait for the driver’s signal before crossing and never walk behind a bus.
  • In carpools, buckle up for every ride, even short ones.
  • On public buses or trains, hold onto handrails, avoid pushing or running, and stand behind the yellow line on platforms.

School Bus Safety – Safe Kids Worldwide

Many children begin walking to school or friends’ houses at this age, sometimes with their own phones. Remind them to keep their eyes up and stay alert.

  • Use crosswalks and obey crossing guards or signals.
  • Put phones and headphones away while walking or crossing.
  • Walk on sidewalks whenever possible; if not, face traffic and stay to the left side of the road.
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing and use lights or reflective gear at dusk or dawn

Walking Safely Tips – Safe Kids Worldwide

As kids get older, they start exploring on bikes, scooters, and sometimes e-bikes. Helmets and visibility are key.

  • Always wear a properly fitted helmet for any wheels under their feet — bikes, scooters, rollerblades, or e-bikes.
  • Ride on the right side of the road with traffic and follow all traffic signs and signals.
  • Use hand signals when turning and watch for parked cars or opening doors.
  • E-bikes and motorized scooters require extra caution; follow local age and speed rules.
