Who has your project aimed to reach?

  • Freshman class
  • Sophomore class
  • Junior class

  • Parents
  • Community at large

Objective:
The objective of our project was to educate students, parents, teachers, and the community on pedestrian safety.

Target Audience:
We targeted the high school students and elementary school students to go back to their parents. We also started to go to local stores to post flyers before the pandemic hit.

Execution:
We used the walking school bus, wrote letters to send to the department of transportation, went to the elementary school, and were about to go to the town council and board of ed meeting. Bound Brook is a walking district. Route 28 runs through the town which makes it dangerous to cross. We spoke to students about pedestrian safety and gave handouts to give to their parents.

Teamwork:
I put pictures in our slides presentation.

Use of Resources:
We were just starting to meet with the police in town to do the Officers in the Crosswalk and students made flyers to hand out to local businesses before the pandemic hit.

Use of Media:
Students were given permission to make an instagram page right before everything happened. Students also had information posted on the TV’s in school.

Thoroughness:
Students researched how safe pedestrians are in town. They also started writing letters to the Department of Transportation to show them the statistics of how dangerous it is in front of the high school.

Impact:
Students started talking about how they never realized things before. I took students on a walking field trip and when they were not allowed to be on their phones or have air pods in, they realized how many people speed and how erratic drivers are. The started sharing the that information with others.

Sustainability:
We went down to the elementary school to start teaching them how to to be a safe pedestrian. We also gave them information to take home to their parents.

Unexpected Lessons Learned:
We were unable to see the final effects due to the pandemic. We had more trips to the elementary school planned and planned on doing more with the school board of education and town council.

Stipend Reporting:

  • T-shirts/wrist bands: $538

Total: $538

As the U Got Brains Champion Schools Program is funded through the Division of highway Traffic Safety, funds raised as a result of the stipend received must be reinvested into transportation safety. If yes, please briefly report the total amount and how this money will be reinvested into transportation safety for your school/community?
We ordered T-shirts for the students in the program to advertise the program more so we could get the word out. We also ordered wristbands that we were going to give out to students who signed up to be safe walkers.
