Project Description:
The objective of Kean 2025 Crash project was to raise awareness about the life-altering consequences, specifically traumatic brain injuries (TBI) received that are primarily caused by vehicle crashes. Our project aimed to educate the Kean University community on the importance of driving responsible, the use of seatbelts, and the long-term impact and effects of brain injuries.
The Kean University team collectively came together to raise awareness about how vehicle crashes can have a high impact on college-aged students, faculty and university staff.
School/Community Engagement:
The Kean University Team was able to reach our student body, faculty, staff, the Kean U. PD the Elizabeth PD and the community by creating the crash project flyer for distribution, tabling events to increase awareness, engagement and promoting Share the Road Pledges in addition to social media posts.
Creativity:
The Kean University Team creative process for the crash project was unique. A colorful and resourceful flyer was created to not only focus on motor vehicle traffic but pedestrian moped, electric scooter, motorcycle and skateboarding traffic as well. While engaging with the students, staff and faculty, they raised and voiced concerns about their experiences while on the roadway. Community feedback posters were created to write down and express their concerns.
Use of Resources:
The Kean University Team utilized resources such as printed materials from the N.J. Division of Traffic Safety that focused on information related to the Click It or Ticket Campaign, Keep Your Distance Campaign, U-Text, U-Drive Campaign, Kean PD impaired driving goggles, Tick-Tock and Instagram.
Evaluation and Impact:
The Kean University Team measured the community engagements as very informative. Several of the students particularly expressed major irritating concerns of other drivers and pedestrians that catch their attention while on the road, but also realized some of their own bad driving habits they were not aware of. Once the information regarding the crash project was provided, over three hundred students, faculty and staff were intrigued to sign the Share the Road Pledge in addition to looking to win the Amazon Gift Card.
